Abstract
This project will analyze the role that research communities play in improving completion rates in doctoral education. ASU will develop and implement a model for building research communities (“ResCOM’s”) into their disciplinary and interdisciplinary doctoral research and training programs. The ResCOM program will facilitate on-going and directed communication and interaction among doctoral students within existing academic units as well as within newly emergent interdisciplinary units and programs. The project will systematically work with faculty and doctoral students to assess the viability of current support structures, identify new support mechanisms to enhance communication, dissemination of information, and provision of physical and virtual settings, and develop institutional models that can then be shared with other academic units.
Proposed Interventions
- Multiple faculty mentors
- Peer mentoring program
- Dissertation workshops/groups
- Research communities/teamwork experiences
- Early research experience
- Web-based financial support tracking system
- Travel grants for professional meetings
